Name that tune...

Hey guys,

I was just listening to a BFFT recording from a show WAY back in 1993... and there's a song that I recognize but I don't know the name of.

It's track # 10 on this show...

I'm thinking it definitely isn't an original Flecktones song because the fiddle part is what I remember the most about the song, but perhaps it's an old New Grass Revival song or just a bluegrass classic... I dunno, can't put my finger on it! And AIC and archive.org were both clueless about it too.

I thought it was possibly Major Honker... but I don't think that's it.

Not sure on this one (hence why AiC doesn't know). I'm still pretty rusty on some of Bela's older work (I guess that is somewhat understandable since there is SO MUCH stuff from Bela), and bluegrass standards are definitely not my specialty.

If anyone has any idea, on this on or the other unamed tracks from this show, that would be fantastic so I can post the full set. I would imagine, since Stuart Duncan is guesting, that they are old bluegrass tunes, or maybe some of Stuart's originals, but I can't say for sure.

Hey, that's Blackberry Blossom! I believe Norman Blake wrote the tune, but not positive. Definitely a bluegrass standard. Here's a version by a couple of kids that is really awesome! These guys are going to be monster players one day.

I knew I recognized it. Couldn't put my finger on it though. Any idea on the other unnamed tunes from that show?

Great, thanks Todd! I knew I'd heard it too... probably in some of my old bluegrass CD's that were my gateway drug to the Flecktones... fell in love with the banjo and then I found Bela!

Track 15 is Down on the Swamp, from one of Bela's solo albums, Drive

that was another of my mystery songs from about a year ago that Bela and Casey Dreissen played during Big Country at the Chicago show I went to!

I recognize 16 too but can't put my finger on it (tracks 19 and 20 on archive.org)

And I don't recognize the encore... sounds like it might be another bluegrass staple.

Track 20 on the archive show listing is "Whitewater" - classic Bela tune from his solo album "Drive."
